Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are no strangers to sharing intimate details of their family life.
But one subject that has been at the forefront of their relationship? Dax’s past drug and alcohol addiction.
Dax has been sober since 2004. In 2018, on the 14th anniversary of Dax’s sobriety, Kristen posted an emotional tribute to her husband.
“I will forever be in awe of your dedication, and the level of fierce moral inventory you perform on yourself, like an emotional surgery, every single night,” she wrote.
“I’m so proud that you have never been ashamed of your story, but instead shared it widely, with the hope it might inspire someone else to become the best version of themselves,” she added.
And an entire year later, Kristen revealed how she and Dax honor the anniversary of his sobriety each year in a ritual they have coined “sobriety birthday.”
“I’m very happy he was born so I celebrate his birthday, but I’m extraordinarily [happy] that he has stayed sober because that’s what allows me to have him in my life as a husband and as a father,” Kristen revealed to People, referencing their two daughters, Lincoln, 7 and Delta, 5.
Dax added that Kristen “spoils the hell” out of him on his sober birthday, explaining: “The nicest presents she’s gotten me are always on my sober birthday. In fact, my real birthday — she still hasn’t gotten me a present!”

This year, the day was a family affair — with Kristen posting a sweet Instagram post showing a card and drawing their daughter created to mark the day.
“Today is my husband’s 16th sobriety birthday,” Kristen wrote in the caption. “My daughter woke him up with a sign, and a sketch of the one and only Ronald Weasley (absolutely random, and also perfect.)”
“Happy birthday Daxy,” she added. “Thank you for dedicating your life to the hard and wonderful work of sobriety, so that we could share it with you.”
