Lost actor Jorge Garcia is best known for his break-out role as Hugo “Hurley” Reyes, which ran for six seasons from 2004 to 2010.
And while he was one of the most loved characters on the show, his weight was constantly scrutinized. However, the unnecessary commentary on his body did not stop Garcia from continuing on with his career.
Since Lost, he’s played Anton the Giant in Once Upon a Time, Dr. Diego Soto in Alcatraz, and he even was featured in a few episodes of Californication. However, his role as Jerry Ortega in Hawaii Five-O was his next grand slam.
He left the show in 2019 and most recently, starred in a film called Nobody Knows I’m Here.
Reports from various sites claim that the Lost actor shed 100 pounds. A report by National Enquirer, which Daily Mail shared in 2014, claimed that the actor’s family and friends were concerned about his health as he pushed 400 pounds.
“We’re talking Type 2 diabetes or, worse, a heart attack,” a friend of the actor allegedly told the outlet. The report described his condition as “grave,” and it mentioned that bariatric surgery could be the only hope.
In 2006, the actor shared with the New York Times how he was making adjustments to his diet, working with a personal trainer, and avoiding the craft services table on set. Later that year, he informed Maxim that he had lost 30 pounds.
A few years later, Garcia had reportedly adopted a vegan lifestyle. At the time, sources cited a stand-up comedy set where he referenced his new lifestyle.
In a 2012 blog post, he shared with his followers that he was growing fond of “nooch,” which is another name for nutritional yeast, which is a common substitute for cheese in vegan dishes.
Garcia has not publicly commented on his body but has been very open about adopting an active lifestyle and sticking to a plant-based lifestyle. While Garcia does not make public appearances, fans are unclear about what his lifestyle looks like today.
Regardless, we are happy he is living his life and for giving us an iconic character from a story that millions of viewers appreciate. We love you, Hurley!
