Married Couple Discovered Dead In Rhode Island, Police Believe They Were Targeted After Find Their Kids With Them at Home

Police in a Rhode Island town discovered a gruesome crime this past week — a married couple found with gunshot wounds in their own home. Shockingly, new reports reveal their three young children were in the home at the time of their murders.

The authorities in Cumberland, Rhode Island identified the couple Thursday as 42-year-old Courtney Huard and 51-year-old Eric Huard. Thankfully, as People reports, none of the three children were harmed in the deadly attack.

They were married and living together at their home on Birchwood Drive in the town, per a statement from Cumberland Police Chief Matthew J. Benson. Police were sent to 28 Birchwood Drive around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday to respond to the report of the two adults who had been shot.

It’s unclear who called the report in to the police. The statement said how the Huards were pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the deaths of the couple were an isolated incident, police detailed. “This was not a random act of violence,” Benson noted in the statement.

However, while police believe this wasn’t a random act of violence, police have not identified any potential suspects publicly as of June 29. Potential motives have not been discussed either.

“I would like to reiterate my deepest condolences and sympathies to the Huard family, including any friends and family and especially the three children left during this most difficult time,” the police chief added.

The deaths remain under investigation at this time by the Cumberland Police Department, with the assistance of Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office.

In their respective obituaries, according to People, Courtney was touted as a devoted mother to her children. “Those in the community would always see her on the sidelines of her children’s events with a bright smile, cheering them on,” it read.

While Eric’s obituary also described him as a “doting” father. “[He] always there for his children and wife, whether coaching their games or baking with Sydney; he loved it all and enjoyed seeing his children smile.”
