Matthew McConaughey’s Gripping Speech On Gun Control Unites And Unifies Americans

Matthew McConaughey shocked Americans this past Tuesday with his impassioned 20-minute speech from the podium of the James S. Brady briefing room in the White House.

Many felt the actor’s speech was much more down-to-earth and relatable than President Joe Biden‘s recent prime-time address on the issue. The speech also focused on some of the previously held dreams of the 19 children lost in the deadly Uvalde, Texas, school shooting, which was undeniably raw and emotional.

“You know what every one of these parents wanted, what they asked us for? What every parent separately expressed in their own way to Camila and me? That they want their children’s dreams to live on. That they want their children’s dreams to continue, to accomplish something after they are gone. They want to make their loss of life matter,” McConaughey said.

McConaughey also anchored into encouraging responsible gun ownership.

“Responsible gun owners are fed up with the Second Amendment being abused and hijacked by some deranged individuals,” McConaughey said. “Regulations are not a step back; they’re a step forward for a civil society and — and the Second Amendment.”

He also endorsed universal background checks, raising the minimum age to 21 for purchasing an AR-15 style weapon, waiting periods, and red-flag laws.

“These are reasonable, practical, tactical regulations to our nation, states, communities, schools, and homes,” he said in part.

McConaughey made it clear how he believes gun legislation is not a matter of “either / or;” but about finding a “middle ground, the place where most of us Americans live anyway, especially on this issue.”

He also challenged both parties to step up during this historic moment in history, encouraging new firearms legislation, stating the parties should “start by making laws that save innocent lives and don’t infringe on our Second Amendment rights.”

He continued, “Enough with the counterpunching. Enough of the invalidation of the other side. Let’s come to the common table that represents the American people. Find a middle ground, the place where most of us Americans live anyway. Especially on this issue. Because I promise you, America, you and me, we are not as divided as we are being told we are.”

McConaughey toyed with the idea of running for governor of Texas late last year.
