Elf Star, Oscar-Nominated Actor Michael Lerner Dead at 81

The world is learning of heartbreaking news about Michael Lerner, who is best known for his roles in Elf and Barton Fink, which landed him an Oscar nomination.

On April 9, Michael’s nephew, Sam Lerner, who currently stars in the Goldbergs, took to Instagram to announce the passing of his beloved uncle. Alongside a photo of Michael from years ago, Sam revealed that the world “lost a legend last night,” April 8.

Michael Lerner was 81 years old.

“It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me. His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special.”

Sam continued, writing, “Everyone that knows him knows how insane he was— in the best way. I’m so lucky I got to spend so much time with him, and we’re all lucky we can continue to watch his work for the rest of time. RIP Michael, enjoy your unlimited Cuban cigars, comfy chairs, and endless movie marathons.”

Lerner’s passing comes 8 months after it was revealed that his Elf co-star James Caan died at the age of 82. At the time, it was revealed that Caan died of a heart attack and coronary artery disease.

Lerner’s cause of death is not immediately known.

Michael’s acting career spans decades and his resume includes shows like The Doris Day Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Alex in Wonderland, Outlaw Blues, and so many more. Many of which led to several award nominations.
