Drama aside, Prince William and Prince Harry are showing a united front after it was revealed that former BBC reporter Martin Bashir took “deceitful” measures to secure the bombshell 1995 interview he conducted with Princess Diana.
The independent investigation stated that the BBC “fell short of its high standards of integrity and transparency” by covering up the deceitful practices, which involved forging documents to suggest that aides close to her were speaking to the press.” The BBC later issued a statement saying that it is “very sorry.”

Now, both Prince William and Prince Harry are speaking out against the BBC and media culture as a whole. In separate statements, the brothers said the same thing, this interview damaged their family in more ways than one.

In William’s statement, the prince said that the way in which the BBC and Bashir used faked documents to secure the interview with his mother is “concerning” and claimed that the BBC “played into her fears and fueled [her] paranoia.” William also said that he believed that the “deceitful” way in which the interview was obtained also “influenced what my mother said” during the 1995 interview.
“The interview was a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse and has since hurt countless others. It brings indescribably sadness to know that the BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia, and isolation that I remember from those final years with her.”
William went on to say that Princess Diana “was failed” by the BBC and the leaders who choose to look the other way, rather than ask the tough questions. He concluded his statement by saying it wasn’t just his family that was let down, the BBC let the public down too.
Shortly after William made his statement, Prince Harry did the same. In his statement, Harry said the “ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.”
“Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest,” Harry wrote. “To those who have taken some form of accountability, thank you for owning it. That is the first step towards justice and truth.”
However, as the prince continued, he admitted that he is still “deeply concern” because these practices are still widespread today. “Then, and now, it is bigger than one outlet, one network, or one publication.”
“Our mother lost her life because of this, and nothing has changed. By protecting her legacy, we protect everyone and uphold the dignity with which she lived her life. Let’s remember who she was and what she stood for.”
