Multiple Sources Attempt to Explain the Reasoning Behind Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth Going Their Separate Ways

On March 24, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth announced their divorce just two days before their 12th wedding anniversary. They reportedly started dating in February 2010 and got married a year later, on March 26, 2011. The former couple shares one child together – an 11-year-old son, Tennessee James.

“We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have created together. Our biggest priority is our son and our entire family as we navigate this next chapter. These matters are never easy,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Divorce papers have yet to be filed by either party, and neither side has elaborated on the reasoning behind their divorce. With that said many outlets have taken to their unnamed sources to try and figure out the details.

On March 24, Page Six reported that there was ‘no big scandal or drama’ behind the divorce and that the two had grown apart in recent years – adding that there were no ‘romantic feelings’ between the two. They also reported that many in their inner circle have been anticipating the divorce.

One of Page Six’s sources explained that the two saw their lives going in separate directions when Hello Sunshine – a company founded by Witherspoon – sold for nearly $1 billion. Toth was also involved in the company and supported the sale, but their newfound wealth resulted in them having different interests.

The Sun‘s report also doubled down on this take, with their source saying their divorce came as no surprise to those close to the couple. “This process of uncoupling really began in late 2021 when it became clear to everybody who knew both of them that they were itching for life apart from each other,” the source said.

They also cited Toth’s ‘midlife crisis’ as a driving force behind the marriage – adding that his ‘personality, attitude, and whole take on life’ changed over the past few years. This was coupled with his decision to leave his position at Creative Artists Agency and join Quibi, which folded six months after its start.

A source for Radar Online confirmed this suspicion. “Leaving his position at CAA to join Quibi was a huge gamble. At the time, Reese asked Jim if it was worth the risk, but he said he was up for the challenge and felt confident he’d bring home millions,” the source said – calling it a breaking point in the marriage.

Reese Witherspoon Never Wanted a Second Divorce

And one of People’s sources close to the couple added that this is a very difficult time for Reese Witherspoon and that she never envisioned herself going through a second divorce. Her first divorce came in June 2008 after ‘irreconcilable differences’ drove her and Ryan Phillippe apart.

“Reese is obviously disappointed and upset. She never saw herself getting another divorce. They love Tennessee, and this is their focus. They will continue to co-parent amicably. There is no drama,” the source said, adding they’re ‘two very different people ‘ now, which wasn’t the case when they married.

While Witherspoon is ‘headstrong,’ ‘focused,’ and ‘hard-working’ following the $900 million sale of Hello Sunshine, Toth has become extremely ‘laid back’ – which is ultimately what led to their differences. “It’s been very difficult for Reese to get to this point, though. They both concluded this was right for them.”

Reese Witherspoon will now look to co-parent her 11-year-old son, Tennessee, with Toth – much like she does with the two children she shares with Ryan Phillippe. The former couple shares a 23-year-old daughter, Ava Elizabeth, and a 19-year-old son, Deacon Reese, from their nine-year marriage.
