Broadway actor Ruthie Ann Miles, 36, announced on social media that she’s expecting her third child. The Tony-winning actor and star of CBS’s All Rise wrote that she and husband Jonathan Blumenstein are expecting a baby this spring. The news comes after a couple of hard years for the couple and a tragedy that was hard to weather.
Ruthie’s pregnancy news comes like a breath of fresh air in a time when we could all use a little hope.
“We’d like to announce our very happy news: We are expecting another child this spring!” she shared in a bittersweet Instagram post on Saturday.
The happy news comes two years after a genuine tragedy. In March of 2018, Ruthie’s 5-year-old daughter Abigail Joy was hit and killed by a driver in New York City. The Broadway community was rocked by the news at the time.

At the time, Ruthie was seven months pregnant with a daughter who she intended to name Sophia Rosemary. Ruthie sustained injuries herself and two months after the horrific accident, she miscarried. One horror seemed to follow another. Other victims of the accident included another child, Joshua Lew, who was also killed and his mother, who is close friends of Ruthie was badly injured.
After the incident, she decided to step back from public life and took some time to privately grieve. Months later, she returned to the stage to reprise her award-winning role as Lady Thiang in a revival of The King and I in London’s West End. She then attended and performed at a benefit concert for Camelot at Lincoln Center before she joined the cast of the TV series All Rise.
According to Ruthie, she needed the time away to heal and to move on. In the birth announcement, Ruthie wrote, “Thank you especially to the many of you who supported us in the aftermath of the crash, continually lifted us up in prayer, doused us with love, encouraged us, let us be and grieve these two years, and now rejoice with us in this new life.”
“We know Abigail Joy and Sophia would have loved being big sisters and are loving watching their family grow,” she wrote, “Love, Jonathan and Ruthie Ann.”
This is such great news coming from Ruthie and her husband after such an unspeakable tragedy. After the accident, Ruthie received a great deal of love and support from the Broadway community. Many even donated to a GoFundMe for her in the aftermath and raised nearly half a million dollars.
The same outpouring of love and support greeted her birth announcement Saturday. Many friends, who happen to be Broadway stars, commented on the post sharing in the excitement. Judy Kuhn, Liz Callaway, Ben Platt, and more offered love and congratulations.
“Oh Ruthie!!!! So many blessings! We love you so,” Laura Benanti commented on Instagram.
