Ed Sheeran Apologizes for Lack of Social Media Activity and Fan Engagement, Citing ‘Turbulent’ Events in His Personal Life

Ed Sheeran took to Instagram on January 31 to apologize to his fanbase for his lack of activity and fan engagement on social media. While he has posted regularly over the past few years, he admits his content got a little ‘boring’ and vaguely explained why – citing some ‘turbulent’ events in his personal life.

“Hey, guys. So I realize I haven’t been that engaged in my social media or my fanbase online over the past couple of years, and the things that have been posted on this account might have got a bit boring. I’m sorry. It’s my fault,” he explained in the video – it appeared as if he was taking a walk in the woods.

To be fair, he did warn fans on November 4th that he would be signing off of social media until 2023. “See you in the New Year,” he wrote at the time. Many fans expressed their sadness over his decision but understood and were willing to give him the time he needs – though some fans started growing impatient.

Ed Sheeran eventually made his return to social media on January 17th to announce a new track titled ‘F64.’ He has posted several times since then, but mostly to promote a few shows as he returned to the stage. Then came his video on Tuesday, where he explained why he hasn’t been as active as normal.

“The reason I’m making this video is, just being totally honest, I’ve had some turbulent things been happening in my personal life. So I just didn’t really feel like being online and pretending to be something I’m not when I wasn’t feeling like that,” he said, adding ‘things are looking up, and I’m back online.’

He also warned fans that they’ll likely start seeing some ‘weird’ stuff being posted onto his account again – fans are used to him showing off his unique personality on social media. And he didn’t disappoint with a – for lack of better words – weird video of him using a ‘Ninja Turtle’ filter. And just like that, he was back. ‘

“People been asking me, ‘Where have I been?’” he chuckled with the filter on and his voice high-pitched. “Where haven’t I been?” he continued. While Ed Sheeran didn’t provide any context as to what those ‘turbulent things’ are, fans are just happy to have their favorite artist back on social media – and on stage!

Ed Sheeran Has Big Plans for 2023

Ed Sheeran knows how to put on a good show for his fans – he’s one of the few artists that sounds the exact same live as he does on streaming services. He showed off his musical talent in front of roughly 50,000 fans at Sky Stadium in Wellington – the capital of New Zealand. The crowd was going crazy.

In fact, his performance in Wellington started with three intimate shows at The Opera House – which holds a little over 1,000 people. He called the shows his ‘warmup shows’ for what he had planned at Sky Stadium. Whether he was performing in front of small or large crowds, Ed Sheeran always kills it.

And even when he doesn’t, he knows how to pick himself back up. For example, there was a moment during his Sky Stadium performance when he forgot the lyrics to his song ‘Galway Girl.’ Instead of trying to play it off, he admittingly told the crowd he forgot his lyrics. They didn’t boo – they laughed with him.

To make the moment that much sweeter, he invited a 10-year-old fan onto the stage with him to help him through the song. It was a moment that stadium will remember forever as she took the mic and saved his show with an impromptu performance of her own. It’s that authenticity that fans love about Ed Sheeran.
