Peta Murgatroyd is no stranger to stirring up a little controversy on social media – and that’s exactly what she did on August 11 when she posted a video of her teaching her son, Shai, how to cook. It sounds like a harmless video (which it was), but it was her caption and text overlay that seemed to agitate people.
“Making sure my son can cook so he’s not impressed by your daughter’s Stouffer’s lasagna,” she wrote in a text overlay – also adding, “He’s going to need a home-cooked meal Felicia” in the caption. The video shows her son whipping up a batter, while she kisses him before staring emotionless into the camera.
While her son was learning how to cook, Peta was getting cooked in the comments section by countless online trolls. For example, one user wrote, “This is pretty cringe. How about teaching my son to cook so he’s an equal partner to your daughter,” while another user called her a ‘future mother-in-law from he**.’

And the nasty comments didn’t end there. Users were calling the video and text overlay weird, creepy, hateful, mean, unwelcoming, rude, disappointing, and every other negative word under the sun. “Showing my daughter this video so that she doesn’t end up with you as a future Mother-in-law,” someone wrote.
Doing a little research, it’s hard to imagine that Peta Murgatroyd posted the video with any serious intent. In fact, the video was quite literally posted in response to a growing trend on social media that appears to have been started by Brontè Capowski, an influencer who posts funny/relatable videos on social media.
On July 20, Capowski posted a video of her teaching her son how to whip a batter – just like in Peta’s video (which was posted nearly three weeks later). Not only that, but Capowski’s video used the same background music, the same emotionless expression, the same caption, and the same text overlay.
To further the claim that the post was made as a joke, Capowski confirmed as much in the caption. “Full disclosure to those confused: the basis of this trend is a joke. no one is attacking your daughter or women. in our home we are raising all of our kids to love and respect everyone,” Capowski explains.
Peta Murgatroyd Responds to the Critics
For all those who took Peta Murgatroyd seriously and thought she was attacking your daughter, that just wasn’t the case – and she clarified as much on her Instagram Story several days after her video went viral. “I will say it one more time for the crazies that think this trend is serious… It is a joke!” she wrote.
She went on to explain that the video was ‘meant to be funny’ and urged her fans, followers, and critics to ‘have a laugh’ – adding that it would be ‘funny if I was actually seriously saying this.’ She also credited her acting for being ‘too good’ and admitted that she’s actually the one in her household that can’t cook.

In fact, Brontè Capowski and Peta Murgatroyd aren’t the only ones to hop on the trend – social media influencer, Laura Elizabeth Graham, also posted a video with the same caption, text overlay, and music. So, there you have it – the post wasn’t supposed to be serious, it was made as a joke, they claim.
Capowski then went on to continue her trend with other “joking” captions – using the same background music and emotionless expression. “Making sure my son hears me having phone conversations so he doesn’t fall for your daughter who will only text,” she wrote in one video.
