Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd are officially a family of four! The couple first took to Instagram on Sunday (June 18) to share a photo of them at the hospital preparing for childbirth. “It’s go time!” Maskim wrote in the Instagram caption, noting that they drove from Napa to LA in ‘record time.’
“[Peta] is the fantastic unicorn that she is and I can’t wait for another one of her best creations! She is an absolutely amazing boy mom and about to birth another lucky man into this world,” he wrote in support of his wife – adding he can’t wait for all the happy tears to come and asking his followers to wish them luck.
Maksim and Peta started dating in 2012, split up in 2013, reconciled in 2014, and became engaged on December 5, 2015. They welcomed their first son, Shai Aleksander, on January 4, 2017 and got married seven months later on July 8, 2017. They announced their second pregnancy on January 13, 2023.

After posting a photo wishing his father a Happy Father’s Day, Maksim took to Instagram for a third time on Sunday – this time with a new addition to the family. “Happy Father’s Day to me!” he wrote in the caption, sharing a photo of him holding his new son. His son’s face was blurred out in the photograph.
After taking several days off social media – for good reason – Maksim Chmerkovskiy returned to Instagram on Wednesday (June 21) to share the first real photo of his new baby boy with a beige outfit on and a matching binkie in his mouth. In the caption, the two-time father revealed the little boy’s name.
“Rio John Chmerkovskiy. Born ~ 6.18.2023. 8.6 oz and thriving!” they wrote in the Instagram caption – the average weight for a boy is 7 lb. 6 oz.. “We are overjoyed to share our baby boy with all of you. @shai.aleksander is already the best big brother and we all feel very complete. Life is good XO.”
The photos continued to roll in on Thursday (June 22). Maksim Chmerkovskiy shared a photo of him sitting up in bed with his older son to his right and his newborn in his left arm. He described the photo as his ‘new favorite pic of all time.’ And by the look of his older son’s face, he’s one happy big brother!
Maksim Chmerkovskiy Wants One More Child
On Thursday (June 22), Peta Murgatroyd posted a video of her husband holding the new baby while she lays in the hospital bed on her phone. He looks over to her and asks, “Do you think we need one more?” He asked the question again before coming to a decision all by himself – “Alright, we’ll get one more.”
The video was made as a joke, so we’re not 100% sure if they’re actually interested in another one. What we do know is they’re going to love this little boy with all their might – especially considering what they’ve gone through as a family over the past few years. It was a long and painful journey, but they finally did it!
Rio John is what we call a rainbow baby – which means he was born after a miscarriage or pregnancy loss. In his case, he was the result of three miscarriages and one round of IVF treatment. Peta suffered her first pregnancy loss in 2020 while in a Whole Foods bathroom. She suffered two more after that.
