How I Found My Way Through a Traumatic Birth and Battle With Postpartum Anxiety

A mom writes in with her tale of motherhood. After waiting her whole life to have a child, the special day finally arrived. But complications made for a traumatic experience that eventually led to a vicious battle with postpartum depression and anxiety. This is her story.

We reached out to the robust Mamas Uncut Facebook community and asked to hear stories from real moms about their experiences. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Our goal is to share these stories (anonymously, if the author so chooses) with our community as a reminder that we are not alone in either our joys or struggles.

“I waited my whole adult life to have a child. I finally got pregnant at the age of 37. Everything was great. The doctor induced me at 37 weeks due to medical reasons. During the induction, I had placenta abruption.

My son was born not breathing. And it took 7 minutes to get him breathing. We both lost lots of blood and had to have blood transfusions.

I was unable to see my son for 3 days. It was very hard on me. When I left the hospital, my son could not. He was in NICU for a week. After my son came home, I had a problem with my incision. It started coming open because of a hematoma. I bled from it for two months and had to go to the doctor twice a week.

After all the trauma I went through, I started to have postpartum anxiety. I couldn’t function or even enjoy my newborn after a year-and-a-half. I went to the doctor and told them and was finally put on medicine for it.

I feel so much better now, and we are about to be welcoming our second child.”
