Taking a feminist approach, one bride-to-be and her fiancé decided that he would take her family name once they were married. However, things got a bit tricky when the bride’s family decided to weigh in.
The soon-to-be-wed woman took to the Reddit community to vent her frustrations and ask, “Am I the a**hole for wanting my finance to take my family name?”
“To start, my fiancé is willing and happy to take my last name — he grew up with a horrible father. He has no attachment to his last name and no siblings,” the original poster (OP) begins. “I have a very unique last name and a strong attachment to it.”
While the OP felt confident in their decision, her family disagreed.
“I brought this up to my father and he said wasn’t so sure about it, given my brother is the only male in the family who would carry on the name. My brother found out before I could bring it up to him and called me, saying I was being inconsiderate and couldn’t believe he hadn’t been asked.”
The woman goes on to say that she feels her family member’s reactions are quite sexist.
“I think the fact that this is an issue at all is rather sexist. It’s my last name too and if I want to give my future husband–who has never had the privilege of feeling like he belongs to a family– my name, no one should take issue.”

The post received over 29,000 comments, most supporting the bride in wanting to share her family name. After the responses poured in, she posted an update.
