One day after news of their divorce went public, Sam Asghari is the first to issue a statement.
On Instagram Stories, he wrote, “AFTER 6 YEARS OF LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHER MY WIFE AND I HAVE DECIDED TO END OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER. WE WILL HOLD ONTO THE LOVE AND RESPECT WE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER AND I WISH HER THE BEST ALWAYS.”
“SH*T HAPPENS. ASKING FOR PRIVACY SEEMS RIDICULOUS SO I WILL JUST ASK FOR EVERYONE INCLUDING MEDIA TO BE KIND AND THOUGHTFUL.”
When Britney Spears met Sam Asghari on the set of her 2016 Slumber Party music video, they fell for each other and they fell hard. They went Instagram official in January 2017 and dated for several years before tying the knot on June 9, 2022. During that time, Sam was Britney’s biggest source of support.
Unfortunately, their relationship has grown sour in the year since. Rumors of marital problems started earlier this year, but both parties were quick to shut them down. Even in late March, when Sam and Britney were seen without their wedding bands, they both had an excuse and claimed nothing was wrong.
We’re now learning that something was wrong all along. On Wednesday (August 16), the couple decided to go their separate ways. Just hours after that report went viral, Sam Asghari filed for divorce. While neither party has addressed the split, multiple sources have attempted to make sense of the separation.
TMZ was the first to report the split and claimed Sam Asghari moved out of their home after a ‘nuclear’ argument where he accused Britney Spears of cheating on him. Entertainment Tonight and People were the first to report the divorce. Since then, numerous sources have come forward with conflicting information.
While an NBC News source said the separation is in Britney’s best interest, an ET source claimed that she ‘has not been doing well’ and that this is the ‘last thing she needed,’ but her immediate circle is by her side and supporting her. ET further claimed that things have been bad between the two for quite a while.
Of Spears’ family members, the only one to remotely react to the news was her younger sister Jamie Lynn. As E! News reported, Jamie “subtly reacted” to the news by “liking” an Instagram post about the breakup.
“They have a lot of love for each other, but they also argue a lot over fundamental issues. Sometimes they feel as though each other’s needs aren’t being completely met. Recently, things took a bad turn and their arguments became more serious and real,” ET claimed – adding that they’re not on the same page.
Page Six eventually chimed in with claims that Sam Asghari planned on blackmailing Britney Spears in an attempt to negotiate the prenup and threatened ‘to go public with extraordinarily embarrassing information about Britney unless he gets paid.’ A Daily Mail source disputed those claims and called them ‘absurd.’
Family Members Growing Concerned for Britney Spears
While Variety reported that Britney Spears has a ‘dream team’ of lawyers representing her during the divorce – including Mathew Rosengart (who helped her through the conservatorship) and Laura Wasser (a celebrity divorce attorney) – a source by TMZ ushered in a wave of concern over Britney’s health.
Not only did TMZ claim that Sam is now ‘fully out of her life,’ but they claimed she has no contact with her family members and is not receiving a lot of support from friends. “She has one confidant, [her manager] Cade [Hudson]. Then there’s her security team, and after that her support system falls off a cliff.”
Even her mother, Lynne Spears, isn’t on speaking terms with Britney – despite the two seemingly making up in May. Now that Britney is alone in her house, family members are worried that she won’t have anyone to ‘step up and help’ her and don’t believe she can handle things on her own at this moment.

With that said, her upcoming memoir – The Woman In Me – is still scheduled for an October 24th release. The book tells her story from her point of view and is being described as ‘a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope’ by the book’s publishers.
