Suzanne Somers Provides Health Update Amid Breast Cancer Battle: “This is Familiar Battleground for Me”

Suzanne Somers and her husband, Alan Hamel, are giving fans an update on the 72-year-old actress’ health after she overcame yet another battle with cancer. It’s a battle she has grown far too familiar with over the past four decades – she was diagnosed with skin cancer in her 30s and breast cancer in her 50s.

And, while it has been more than 20 years since her initial breast cancer diagnosis, it continues to find its way back and she continues to put her ‘battle gear’ on and ‘go to war.’ At least that’s how she describes it in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight – where she vows to not let the disease control her.

“I have been living with cancer since my 20’s. And every time that little f***** pops up, I continue to bat it back. I do my best not to let this insidious disease control me,” she tells ET. “It’s a recurrence of my breast cancer. Like any cancer patient, when you get that’s dreaded, ‘It’s back’ you get a pit in your stomach.”

In her interview, Suzanne Somers describes herself as ‘very tough’ and explains how cancer has become ‘familiar battleground’ for her, but she has her family to thank for continuing their love and support through the darkest of times – after all, it’s not just a disease that affects her, but one that affects her family too.

“Once it hit me in my 20’s, Alan and I got even closer and every moment of every day was precious. We have not spent even one day apart in over 42 years. That’s the big upside of cancer,” she said of her husband, Alan Hamel. “And my incredible family has been unbelievably supportive every step of the way.”

Suzanne Somers and Alan Hamel met on the set of Anniversary Game in the late-1960s – Hamel was the host of the show, while Somers was a prize model. The two ended up moving in with one another and lived together for nearly 10 years before marrying in 1977 – and they’ve been happily married ever since.

In an interview with Page Six, Alan revealed that his wife ‘got an all-clear’ about her recent battle on June 6, but they understand how tricky cancer is and will now ‘closely monitor everything going forward. “Suzanne has lived with cancer all her life,” he said. “She has now dealth with her cancer once again.”

Suzanne Somers Credits Her Chemical-Free, Healthy Lifestyle for Keeping Her Alive

While Suzanne Somers has her family to thank for keeping her grounded throughout her cancer battle, she also credits her chemical-free and organic lifestyle for keeping her healthy enough to continue that battle. In fact, her doctors believe that type of lifestyle is the reason why she’s still living to tell the tale.

“My doctors said that if I didn’t lead a chemical free life, supported by bio- identical hormones, I would not likely be here today,” she added – something her husband alluded to in his interview with Page Six. It’s a lifestyle she began in 2000, when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer, and it has proven effective.

While she has come out on top of her recent cancer battle, Somers is taking this time to focus on her mental (and physical) health – which means putting work ‘on the back burner for now,’ according to her husband. Of course, that means pausing their popular Facebook Live show – don’t worry, they’ll be back.

“I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter. Alan has been by my side every step of the way. I can’t even explain how much he has done for me,” Somers wrote in an Instagram post on July 31.
