My 5-Year-Old Suddenly Wants to Nurse Again: Is This Normal?

My 5-Year-Old Suddenly Wants to Nurse Again: Is This Normal?

A mom writes in asking for advice about nursing. She says her now-5-year-old daughter “all of the sudden” wants to start nursing again. She adds that she nursed her daughter for 3.5 years. But for the last year and a half, she has not nursed. She is confused as to why this might be coming up again now, especially given that she says they haven’t been around anyone who is currently nursing. Is this normal?

My 5-Year-Old Suddenly Wants to Nurse Again: Is This Normal?

The community offered this mom in need a lot of great advice. Read some of their responses below.

“She probably wants the comfort and for some reason is feeling insecure, heck with this COVID, rioting, and such we are all feeling insecure. You can tell her she is too old but you can hold her like you did while breastfeeding and talk to her.”

“Are you pregnant or still producing milk? Maybe she can still smell the milk and that’s her natural reaction, like when we smell amazing food and we’re all of a sudden hungry lol.”

“Currently experiencing that with my 2-year-old and 6-year-old. My one-year-old is still breastfeeding. A few times I’ve woken up to find the 2- and 6-year-olds nursing!”

“She might not want to grow up….5 is a scary age!”

“New baby? Big changes? Could be wanting attention or jealous? Maybe just wants more one on one time with you.”

“She might have anxiety and is in search of comfort.”

“Maybe she just wants that same bonding time or attention.”
