Superheroes have become part of the fabric of American culture over the last several decades. Starting with characters from comic books and then, jumping to big screen adaptations. Thus, fans of Marvel are celebrating their love for the characters with their inspired Marvel tattoos. Marvel superheroes are enjoying one of their most popular periods since they were first introduced, thanks to the success of the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). That success has spread like wildfire, including in the tattoo industry. Marvel tattoos are big business these days!
We wanted to get a better understanding of the possibilities and limitations of Marvel tattoos as well as the trends and some of the best tattoos we put our eyes on. There are so many exciting ways to go about getting your Marvel tattoo. You might look to the comics for inspiration or to the characters as they were portrayed in various movies and television series. If you are looking for superhero ink inspiration, you have come to the right place!
Let’s Talk All Things Marvel Tattoos!
Sketch tattoos are extremely popular among Marvel tattoos because they honor the comic book roots of some of Marvel’s most beloved characters. In this example, we find Spider-Man looking especially energetic.
Who else enjoyed the Moon Knight series? We find a very cool Khonshu tattoo inspired by the series. Take a close look at the costume that includes so much detail, including texture.
The Captain’s Shield
If you are looking to get a small Marvel tattoo, you can choose something like Captain America’s shield that can be scaled down. Take a closer look at the way white ink has been applied here to give the appearance of a reflection. Pretty cool!
Bold Black Panther
Wow! Isn’t this Black Panther tattoo dramatic? We love the dark nature of this one and how it also has a reflective quality. If you want a portrait Marvel tattoo, consider something similar that will constitute a half or full sleeve.
Iron Man looks so alive in this brightly colored portrait. Take a look at how the artist has framed this tattoo with bold lines that look like brushstrokes. If you’re not afraid of color, consider going full brightness for your Marvel tattoo.
Doctor Strange AKA Benedict Cumberbatch‘s likeness has been perfectly captured in this very large Marvel tattoo that covers most of the lower leg. While we are fans of color, black and grey tattoos also have their virtues as is evident in this handsome example.
Who does not love Groot? We think he’s one of the very best parts about Guardians of the Galaxy. We get a truly galactic vibe from this brightly colored design that puts our friend, Groot in the foreground and celestial bodies in the back. Your Marvel tattoo can be out of this world too!
Of all the Marvel tattoos we found while researching them for this post, the most popular character in recent months to get tattooed is the Scarlet Witch AKA Wanda AKA Elizabeth Olsen. We think the tattoo artist did an excellent job of capturing her in this Marvel tattoo.
Deadpool is also popular among Marvel tattoos. In general, these tattoos are more playful than the others which totally reflects the attitude of this character. This Marvel tattoo is an ode to the comic book that spawned the character. Bravo!
Would you know that this Gamora Marvel tattoo was actually a cover-up design? We would have not! The artist did a great job of blasting over the original star tattoos for this portrait. What a dream!
Spider-Man and Venom are both extremely popular Marvel tattoos. In this example, we find the iconic mask done in a 3D style. It’s rather singular and unlike any other Marvel tattoo on this list.
Real Captain America
Wow! Does this tattoo look just like Captain America or what? Realism is difficult to achieve with tattooing but there are plenty of artist out there who excel at it.
Cartoon Captain America
If you want to go in a different direction, consider this bobblehead-style Captain America that looks rather cartoonish. We saw a lot of these really cute childlike designs for many other characters as well.

Here’s an old-school Thor portrait based on earlier comic books. While we love the Marvel tattoos inspired by the films, the comics really do offer ample content for ink inspiration.

People sure do love the Norse god of mischief, Loki. We find a very convincing Marvel tattoo here that features the character. If you want to bring more definition to your design, ask for it to be framed like the above example. It always looks great!
Hammer of Thor
We find Thor’s hammer here with some beautiful details that set it apart from other hammer tattoos. You could easily scale something like this down for a tattoo that is more modest in size.
Hulk-smash! We could not bring you a list of Marvel tattoos without at least one of the Hulk. There’s electricity running through this character that has been masterfully tattooed. What a fun one!
Kawaii Bucky Barnes
Bucky Barnes gets a kawaii makeover in this Marvel tattoo. Pink is not the first color that comes to mind when we think of the character but this tattoo proves that it should!
Stan, the Man
Stan Lee was a legend by every measure. The father of Marvel comics, it seemed only fitting to include a tattoo of him among these Marvel tattoos. This design imagines the figure with face tattoos.
Iron Man Close-Up
We told you these framed tattoos look great. Here we find Iron Man or at least a piece of his face inside. This is such an arresting tattoo! If you can find yourself an artist capable of something like this, keep them close and tip them very well!
