Anaglyph 3D is the stereoscopic 3D effect achieved by means of encoding each eye’s image using filters of different colors, typically red and cyan. Anaglyph 3D tattoos contain two differently filtered colored images, one for each eye. Most of the tattoo designs on this list belong in that category, but we decided to throw in some remarkable photorealistic designs as well to round things out and further discover the limits of the 3D tattoo.
3D tattoos are definitely one of the hottest tattoo trends right now and people are getting some of the most fun designs from everything to skulls and flowers to pop culture stars like Pikachu and Bart Simpson. These tattoos vibrate with energy and can absolutely make your eyes cross if you look at them too hard. It’s part of the appeal! 3D tatts are a bold choice and you’ll need to consider the way the skin ages and the effects of that on these tight designs down the line. But, we encourage you to live in the moment and express yourself to the fullest with whatever type of tattoo you want! Check out these trippy 3D tattoos that are bursting with life.
Something has gone terribly wrong at this campsite. While the subject matter of an alien abduction is unsettling, the overall effect of this tattoo is rather effective. The stippling used under the UFO is especially innovative.
We’d like a refund! Although this spider is terrifying, it’s true that it’s done extremely well. In general, these anaglyph designs use blue and red ink, but it’s possible to get the same effect with black and neon-infused color. What a rush!
Here’s another example of black and neon that also works extremely well. We love this design because the very scary stinger of this scorpion has been transformed into a rose.
Wow! This Pikachu tattoo looks especially electric. How do tattoo artists do these without loosing their minds? There’s got to be some sort of industry-wide secret for keeping focus with these.
A 2D sunflower meets a 3D skull in this haunting design. You don’t see many like this and we think it’s rather fun. Do we hope sunflowers bloom from every skull? Sure!
This tattoo utilizes indigo and black inks to produce one of our favorite designs on this list. Look how tightly the overlay of the two roses is. This is a truly fascinating and mesmerizing design.
What a wild ride! Where the two images were super close in the previous image, the opposite is true for this face. There’s an offset here that’s slightly unnerving and we mean that in a good way.
We figured you might need a little palate cleanser every few images to help bring you back down to earth. Here’s a photorealistic tattoo of an architectural feature. It certainly does have depth, but in a different way than the anaglyph designs present it.
The tattoo artist who shared this image captioned it with the fact that it’s their first time doing a 3D tattoo. We think they nailed it! This is so neat and incredibly tidy, the mark of an excellent artist.
We’re big fans of pet tattoos of dogs, cats, and everything in between. We look at a ton of tattoos here at MU, and we can honestly say this is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. The 3D design frames an oddly geometric design of a dog that’s shaded with some masterful dotwork. We’re not complaining about it!
This adorable cloud character with a star is utterly charming. We’re not sure if this design was inspired by something we’re unfamiliar with or if it was an original, but we absolutely adore it.
Head in the Clouds
More clouds! Here, we find a person levitating into the sky with their head obscured by a cloud. Do you think this pair was spaced too far apart or do you like it? We’re torn. But, we love the idea.
This tattoo is slightly terrifying, but it makes us feel alive, so, thanks. We’re often treated to a number of anatomical heart designs when we’re researching tattoos, but this one is unlike any other. Bravo!
To give your eyes a reprieve, take a look at this dragonfly tattoo that looks like an actual bug has landed on this person’s shoulder. The intense shadow “underneath” it allows it to look truly real.
This person really decided to seize that moment by getting this completely insane design that features not one, not two, but at least three different color inks. We didn’t expect to have our brains melted today, but here we are.
Eat Your Heart Out, Botticelli
Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus is one of the most iconic works of art in history. We find Venus here, in double. This minimalist take on the classic painting. Of all the 3D tattoos on this list, this one is one of the most chill.
Time to take a breath from the 3D and get totally freaked out by this scorpion tattoo. Why must people put these bugs on their bodies? Like, live your life, but this is so creepy.
If you’re going to hand tattoo, do it like this. What a fabulous choice, placement, and size for this skin decor. It’s true that you can’t go wrong with red and black.
What Lies Beneath
We find a somewhat different design that’s unlike the rest on this list, in that, it is two separate designs that have been applied on the same spot. We find a red skeleton inhabiting a blue spacesuit which makes this design look almost 3D but the end result is a completely different one.
These tattoos are not going to break our brains. We love all three of these basic designs that have been elevated by doubling it up. This is one of the most effective ones on the list because it uses blue and red and it’s so tight.
There’s no mystery what the person with this tattoo was after. We find the word “visceral” framed by some basic design elements all doubled up.
The Kiss (2020)
The person who shared this image captioned it “the kiss of death.” It’s both romantic and terrifying while also being extremely brain altering. This is such an exciting design.
Hope You Dance
It should come as no surprise that a Deadhead would be attracted to a 3D design. Here, we find a skeleton joyously dancing. Get into the morbid groove!
Okay, here are more bugs on people to help your mind find its center once more. Look at these cute little ladybugs. Micro tattoos are so fun and require so much skill which is clearly on display here.

We leave you with this bizarre choice a mini spine that’s actually rather large. We find the same design tattooed twice. Once, in black. And, once in red. If you’re going to go for it you might as well go all out, right?
There you go! We hope you enjoyed these 25 3D tattoo designs that utilize anaglyph images. We imagine this trend is only going to get hotter, so get ahead of it and think of an image you’d love tattooed in 3D.
